Automatic Multiple Session Management

Copy from camera media to a high speed destination, then from the high speed destination to other destinations - Automatically

Double Data's concept is different from other software. With other software, its a one shot deal - copy data and move on to the next roll. With Double Data, the idea is to manage a full production day's worth of footage. Scroll back and make sure you did copy a roll, and check its status. Copy multiple rounds or multiple layers of copies all automatically. Even optimize when data is copied to secondary destinations based on available I/O. Thats all possible with Double Data

Or do it the same tried and true way

Double Data also supports just plain old verified copy from source to destination. Based on industry standards, Double Data will ensure that your valuable data is copied correctly. Simply dont setup a second session, and Double Data will work as a normal copy/verify method that has become go-to solution for verified data management.

What Session Management Really Means

This idea of one session for the whole days worth of footage - what is the benefit?

A session for a whole day?

With previous software we released, we found that a large number of users were running multiple copies of the same software at the same time. They were doing this to help manage their data flows and keep a coordinated effort without having to re-set destinations for every source.

So what Double Data does is combine that need into one program. We now will copy that camera original source to 4 destinations. The first destination is then considered to be the MASTER, and ideally would be a high speed RAID that can read & write very fast.

From this MASTER destination, Double Data will then re-copy the footage in the secondary session to other - slower - destinations, such as single-drive shuttles or across smaller bandwidth connections such as Firewire or USB.

Double Data is even smart enough to know when to pause copy processes based on your workload. For instance, say you have a shared firewire bus for reading from the camera media to a high speed RAID over eSATA, then you want to copy to other bare shuttle drives that are on the same firewire bus. If you were to copy to all destinations at the sme time you'd get very slow results. However, Double Data can increase your apparent speed by waiting to copy to the bare shuttle drives until the data is already on your eSATA RAID. In this case you would be able to read/write at firewire's full 800Mb/sec instead of at 100Mb/sec or slower if you were reading & writing at the same time on that same bus.

Other benefits of session management
  • Able to see a whole days work in one view
  • Able to track a single piece of media from source through multiple copies
  • Automatic pausing the second session while the first one is working
  • Better management of time
  • Automatic management of data throughput
  • By automatically starting the second session when the first is complete, you dont waste time, or worse, forget to copy footage
  • Reporting on a whole days work for editorial & archival

Or dont use session management

Double Data still does the same verified copies of your footage, to multiple destinations simultaneously. You dont have to use the multiple sessions if you dont want to. Just use the first session, and copy to multiple destinations at the same time, just like previous versions of our software.

Advanced features for modern workflows

Data Management

From on set, to editorial to archiving, Double Data provides a way for you to verify that all the footage is correctly copied and rendered, no matter what production stage you are at.

Workflow Management

Double Data is designed to help you manage your computer resources to help you transfer data faster. Sometimes its easier top copy from A to B to C, and Double Data will do it, automatically.

Better Reporting

Double Data keeps track of where your data went, when, what its transfer status was, and even its checksum. At the end of a days work, you can generate a report to send of to editorial of all the files copied.

Remember Your History

You get a call that someone is missing footage. They claim it doesnt exist. Now you can trace what happened by using Double Data to generate a report for up to the last 30 days, and prove that it was copied, when, to what destination and even its file size and checksum.

Double Data :: On Set

Double Data helps to speed up your on-set workflow. Now you can make multiple copies of each media file at the same time to different destinations. No need to copy once, then copy elsewhere. Simply mount your original camera media (CF Card, SSD, SxS, etc.) and hit the start copy button. Your data will instantly go to all the destinations you have setup. No sitting waiting for multiple copies, and no single point of failure.

Copies Made Safely

Make sure that the data from your camera media is truly unique, and if not, make it unique! We've run into times when the camera accidentally creates folders with identical names to previous shots (either due to human error or computer fault). With Double Data, it will alert you to any such situation and by default create a new folder to safely store that data in. If you know its a duplicate shot, you can always override the program.

Copies Made Correctly

Double Data helps to ensure that the data you read from your original camera media is the same data you have throughout your post process. With the terabytes of information you will create, its very easy for a digital zero or one to get misplaced, not to mention hard drive failures and overwrites. Any one of these issues can lead to a failure of your media files. We overcome this by creating checksums right off the original camera media and passing those through the copy process. If one byte of data is missing you will know about it.

Platform Independent

No matter what platform you currently use to backup and archive your camera media files with, the checksums created by Double Data are platform independent. So you can use the Mac version on set, the Windows version in editorial and know that the checksums will still match. In fact, because these checksum types are industry standards, you can be confident that you can use them years down the road.

Double Data :: In Editorial

Double Data is an application designed to help you better manage your data workflow. With the terabytes of data that you will create during your project, Double Data helps to step in, making sure copies of each camera media file go to the right place, and accurately.

Post Process

By gathering more information during the first on-set copy process, we can help to alleviate the search for missing shots. You can enter info about the shots before you copy them, and Double Data will record those to simple text files along with all copys of the footage. From there, editors can help search for missing shots, or for an audit log of what was transferred where.

Double Data :: Archival

Double Data offers 3 levels of protection against missing or dropped data. With these different levels of protection, you can be assured that your data written to your archival system is the same data that will be read out. Simply by including these checksums, you can ensure that the data is correct when you read it years from now.

Accountability and Audit Trails

By using this system, you can track when each file was transferred, when, and if the file was transferred correctly with a matching MD5 sum. This will help to pinpoint where things went wrong, should that happen. In addition, it is possible to see which files were originally transferred off the camera, to see if a shot was ever copied.
